Desiree Cousteau was born Deborah A. Scheer in Savannah, Georgia, in 1956. She grew up in a very conservative Baptist family and eventually enrolled in college in Athens, Georgia. The casting couch eventually led to minor roles in a couple of B movie exploitation films - 'Caged Heat' (1974) and 'Super Lady' (1975) - but it was obvious her mainstream career was going nowhere. At the time she was still working as a stripper. "I worked for Alex [De Renzy] at his club called 'The Playpen'. I was dancing there with three other girls - we put on a live sex show. We did a lesbian thing. Sometimes it was simulated on stage, and sometimes we did the real thing." Despite her star status and natural beauty though, her private life appears to have been quite 'normal'. "I'm just very old-fashioned and romantic. We don't do anything strange or kinky. This, along with her constant weight problems and friction with her parents signaled the end of her career as a porn star. "My mom and dad know. There's no way I could have kept it from them after three years. They saw my pictures advertised in the newspapers and freaked. They're very conservative, Baptist people. My dad doesn't like it, my mom cries a lot. And that's another reason I want to get away from doing it. Because when I go home it's kind of embarrassing." Richard Pachenco, who also worked with her, later commented: "Desiree Cousteau was a wonderful person early in her career then hit big time trouble. She hit a wall and moved on."

In November 1980 she claimed, "The last film I shot was 'Inside Desiree Cousteau' (1979). There are some I made last year and two years ago that are just about to be released." As a result movies such as 'Delicious' (1981) and 'Sweet Alice (1983) were still being released long after she had left the industry. She was never a good actress, even by porn standards, but she looked great having sex. People in the industry may have had problems working with her, but the public loved her air-headed bimbo roles that seemed to fit her perfectly. Following her departure from porn numerous rumors began circulating as to what she was doing. Some say that she started a family and lived as a housewife, others that she had a nervous breakdown and was institutionalized. The first claims that she got married and settled down into an anonymous family life. After some dialogue, the film features cutaway scenes showing various positions of employment that Desiree held, and how she often lost her job as a result of her naivity after unwitting sexual encounters with both men & women.

Several scenes are regarded as classics in 1970s porn.

In the first sex scene of the film, Desiree takes a job as a reporter, and is sent to interview Mr Ryan, a Presidential hopeful (played by Richard Pacheco). At first dismissing her, she pleads with him for an interview, and is invited to his home, where he is in his swimming pool. She falls, or rather is pulled, into the pool by Mr Ryan, and is highly upset. The scene briefly cuts back to Desiree at home, later in the timeline, explaining that Mr Ryan behaved like a true gentleman, before cutting back to the poolside where Desiree is giving him head. Mr Ryan then fucks her in several positions, before cumming on her backside. They then continue fucking in the pool, with some unique underwater photography catching the action, before Mr Ryan pulls out of Desiree's pussy and shoots his load in the pool. After being dismissed as a reporter for writing an article on her experiences with Mr Ryan, Desiree takes a job selling perfumes door-to-door. The orgy finale doesn't seem to fit with the plotline of the film, but was a common finale to 1970s adult films. The scene itself is quite good, despite the poor editing which sees everyone clothed for a few seconds, then cuts in when the action is already under way. Although billed as an orgy, there is a degree of manogamy in the scene, rather than being an all-out gangbang. The standouts in this scene are Susan Nero (who gives an uncredited actor oral throughout the scene, while getting nailed doggy-style by another uncredited actor), and Lisa K. Loring, who starts off going down on Desiree, before being whisked away by Michael Morrison for some DP action with Mike Horner. Interestingly, Desiree has no presence in the scene after Loring departs for her DP, except as a spectator. The scene has many uncredited players, although several of the male cast are familiar faces for those who know 1970s adult film (perennial anal king Michael Morrison, a young Mike Horner, and John Seeman are amongst the notable male cast, while TJ Carson & Dorothy LeMay are amongst the female participants).

Reviews often incorrectly claim that Susan Nero is the actress featuring in the second scene, where Desiree is selling perfumes. The actress is in fact an Australian actress, Misty Regan. Susan Nero does not appear until the orgy scene finale, and is the large-breasted actress, wearing a red & black garter. The two actresses don't actually resemble each other, but presumably, as Nero's name is prominent in the credits, reviewers mistake her as being in a scene regarded as one of the more memorable scenes in the film.


The credit roll at the end of the film is identical to another Leon Gucci film, Female Athletes, and many of the cast that are billed as appearing in Inside Desiree Cousteau didn't actually appear in the film.

The film was shot in San Francisco, with scenes shot at the Grand Hyatt & Westin St. Francis hotels, the Palace Of Fine Arts, and Union Square.
